The Country Club of Troy, established in 1925, is one of the premier private country clubs in the capital region, and the only private club in Rensselaer County. The club’s first President, Charles Stone, retained Walter J. Travis, a leading American golf architect, to design the golf course. Travis’ layout, although moderate in length, measuring just over 6400 yards from the back tees, provides golfers quite a test with its numerous, well placed bunkers and undulating greens. Recent restorations of the course consist of a state of the art irrigation system, restored bunkers, new cart paths, and enhancements to selected tee complexes. The Country Club of Troy is the last course that Travis designed and the club is a proud member of the Walter J. Travis Society ( ). The clubhouse was designed in 1927 by then famous New York City architect Pliny Rogers. The unique aspect of the design is that it consists of several buildings rather than the large mansion type structures of that era. The clubhouse was built to overlook the gorge of the Poestenkill Creek, the 18th hole of the golf course and the picturesque hills of Brunswick and the Grafton Mountain. The Porch, unlike any other, is the membership’s favorite area of the clubhouse. Whether it is enjoying a meal while watching golfers complete their round, dancing the night away at a club event or wedding reception, or participating in a golf outing, the porch is the perfect setting. Recent restorations of the clubhouse include new furnishings, flooring and wall treatments, an interior redesign of the golf shop and updated porch and pool furniture. The club is located one mile from the main roads, thereby providing a peaceful and scenic location to enjoy a round of golf, a game of tennis or a swim in the pool. The fall foliage is particularly spectacular. The Country Club of Troy is a family-oriented club that has over 75 years of tradition. The club is active year round, but especially so during the summer months where golf takes center stage. One of the premier events in the capital region is the Troy Men’s Invitational Tournament, where the top golfers of the area come together for three days to challenge Travis’ design, and where a cumulative score of par will put one atop the leader board. If golf is not your game, other club facilities include an Olympic size swimming pool, five beautiful red clay tennis courts and two platform tennis courts. |
